Many people dream of living in the United States.  And sometimes, with just enough luck, that dream becomes a reality.  For 50,000 people, the luck of the draw is all that’s needed to receive what was once only a dream. Each year, the Diversity Immigrant Visa Lottery gives 50,000 lucky individuals  lawful permanent residence in the United States.  The program is aimed at bringing in individuals from countries that are under-represented in U.S. immigration.   The application process is open to anyone so long as his or her country of origin is not an excluded country.

Currently, excluded countries include Bahamas, Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, China, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Haiti, India, Jamaica, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, South Korea, United Kingdom, and Vietnam.  Besides being a native of a qualifying country, applicants must also meet other requirements.  Those requirements include having obtained either a high school diploma or two years of work experience within the last five years in an occupation that requires at least two years of training.

If you meet the requirements, you are encouraged to apply.  However, if you are currently living in the United States, you are not encouraged to apply since you cannot be processed for residence from within the United States.  After applications are submitted, individuals are chosen using a government computer, which selects qualified individuals at random.  If you are one of the lucky winners, your dream of living lawfully in the United States is set to come true!
